Mousepad Sizes: 360x450 vs XL vs Full-Desk Pads

Pad size is not a lifestyle choice — it is determined by your sensitivity, your grip, and how much desk you can spare.

A large desk-sized mousepad under keyboard and mouse

Size is the most underestimated mousepad decision. Too small and your flicks die at the edge mid-swipe; too big and you have covered a perfectly good desk in fabric. The right answer falls out of two facts: how far your hand travels per movement, and how much desk you own.

The common sizes, measured

Medium pads suit high-sensitivity wrist aimers whose movements rarely exceed a palm’s width. Large pads — roughly 360 to 450 mm wide — are the competitive default, big enough for low-to-mid sensitivity arm aiming with the keyboard off the pad. XL and full-desk mats put the keyboard on the surface and remove the edge entirely.

Sensitivity decides your minimum

The logic is simple: lower sensitivity means longer physical swipes, and a swipe must fit on the pad. If you aim with your arm at a few hundred DPI, you will routinely sweep 30 centimeters or more — a medium pad is a hard border you die at. If you aim with your wrist at higher DPI, a large pad gives you more room than you will ever use.

Grip compounds this. Palm and arm aiming pair naturally with large surfaces; check our grip style guide for which one you use.

Convert before you buy, too. If you track your sensitivity as centimeters per 360-degree turn (the common community metric), make sure your longest comfortable swipe fits on the pad with margin to spare, not edge to edge.

Desk real estate and keyboard placement

Measure your desk before buying an XL or full-desk mat. A 1200 x 550 mm pad needs nearly a meter of clear width and will relocate your keyboard onto the fabric, raising its position slightly. That interacts with posture more than people expect — our desk height guide covers how keyboard position changes elbow angle, and a thick pad under the front edge changes it further.

Thickness deserves one line: 2 to 3 mm plays firmer and flatter, 4 to 6 mm cushions the wrist. Tracking is identical; pick by comfort.

Where to start if unsure

Start at large (450 x 400 mm) if you are unsure — it fits every grip, sensitivity, and almost every desk. Drop to medium only if you know you aim with the wrist at high sensitivity. Go XL or full-desk only for consistently low sensitivity or a unified-desk aesthetic you actually want. Once size is fixed, tune the feel with our control vs speed texture guide.

Frequently asked questions

What mousepad size do most FPS players use?
Community reports consistently point to large pads around 450 by 400 mm as the competitive standard — enough room for low-to-mid sensitivity arm aiming without claiming the whole desk. Wrist players at higher sensitivity are comfortable on smaller medium pads.
Is a full-desk mousepad worth it?
For low-sensitivity players who make wide arm swipes, yes — a full-desk mat like a 1200 by 550 mm pad removes the fear of running off the edge mid-flick. It also unifies the keyboard and mouse surface. Everyone else is paying for desk fabric they will never aim across.
Does mousepad thickness matter?
Thickness affects cushioning and edge feel, not tracking. Thin 2 to 3 mm pads give a firmer, more consistent glide plane; thick 4 to 6 mm pads cushion the wrist. Choose on comfort — sensors perform the same on both.
